Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) occurs when extra cholesterol and other fats circulating in the blood collect in the walls of the arteries that supply blood to your limbs. This creates a narrowing of the arteries and reduces or even blocks the flow of blood. The most common symptom of PAD is painful cramping in the leg or hip, particularly when walking. Individuals who are most affected by PAD are smokers, people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
